Every May, there’s a subtle adjustment to the calendar and suddenly everyone you know is boasting about their garden. Chelsea Flower Show has that power. It swoops in like a note from school giving people who’ve quietly fantasised about their borders all winter permission to embrace that obsession fully for a few days. For a few days everyone in the country is a person who has strong feelings about dahlias and knows precisely what makes a cutting garden great. If you know someone like that. Or someone who watched the coverage and got a bit glassy eyed about the walled gardens or the wildflower meadows, then this collection is for them.
We compiled it together because we realised that the majority of gardening gifts fall into two camps. They’re either so bog standard that anyone could have thought to buy them (a trowel, a packet of seeds….you picked it quickly because you needed a gift.) Or they’re so specialist that you have to know someone’s exact gardening plans and processes already to buy them anything. We wanted the stuff in-between. The things that someone who really cares about their garden would appreciate without us having to know their planting plan by heart.
That meant quality. No novelty garden gifts. The sort of stuff that garden lovers would want, not simply tolerate. Tools you enjoy using because they feel like they’ve been designed by someone who actually uses them. Books full of advice from people who’ve grown things and got things wrong along the way. Objects so beautiful you’d be happy to leave them outside all year rather than treasure them indoors where they won’t get ruined. If you know someone who spends more time in the garden than the sitting room you can gift things from this collection and have total confidence they’ll get used.
Chelsea as an event sort of lands right when people’s gardening desires are at their peak. They’re getting ready. They want things to grow. A gift like this at that moment means much more than one off Christmas when everyone’s beds are bare and the seed catalogue hasn’t even arrived yet. We like to think that timing is everything. Get it right and you’re no longer giving a gift, you’re adding fuel to something the recipient cares about.
