Arsenal
Choosing an Arsenal gift is easier than it looks until you find yourself staring blankly into the centre of the official club shop and realise that yet another scarf just isn’t going to cut it. Buying football merchandise is difficult because the vast majority of it is naff. And naff translates as ‘you didn’t really bother did you?’ The shirt they’ll struggle to get match because they already own it in every other kit they’ve worn. The mug that’s destined to join three others they already have in the cupboard. The keyring that will be filed away in a drawer by the time February rolls around. We wanted to do better than that.
Here’s what happens when you actually spend more than a few seconds thinking about the Arsenal fan in your life. When you actually consider them as a person and not a postcode. Some Arsenal fans supported the club as kids, they’ll have stories of The Invincibles their dad or mum took them to see. Others will be newer converts, maybe they fell in love with the current squad, maybe they love the actual feeling that this Arsenal team gives you; that ineffable buzz that tells you something good is happening at the Emirates right now. Doesn’t matter why they started caring. The fact they do care means that gifts, when chosen with love and attention, speak to them in a way that generic clutter bought purely for the badge doesn’t.
There’s one way we tested everything in this selection. Would we give this to an actual person we know who bleeds red and white? Would we wrap this up and hand it over knowing they’ll get a kick out of opening it as much as we would have? Nothing made the cut that didn’t pass that test. Lots of ideas and products got discarded as soon as we applied that criteria. What you see here has a bit of soul; a bit of thought and care went into picking it. There’s wit. These gifts have a reason to exist beyond stuffing them into a gift bag.
We designed this collection for birthdays leading up to north London derbies. We built it with Christmas’ where the table is inevitably scattered with for and against supporters in mind. But also for the fan who stuck by Arsenal through the lean years and deserve something that fits their level of devotion. There’s no filler. We don’t want to bang out loads of links to Smash Mansion coloured dungarees just to boost our own word count. Genuine Arsenal fans have been through enough without also having to pretend they like some troll endorsed generic bit of merch they’ll never use. If we’ve picked it, we stand by it. That’s the only ethos that matters.
