Some people watch TV. Other people live through it. We make gifts for the latter group. Figuring out what to get those people can be tough. Once you forget about the temptation of novelty items and realize they care about much more than a quote printed on a mug, it becomes pretty simple. What tv buffs want more than anything is for people to show they were listening. That you know they spent three weeks in the same universe as this character they can’t stop thinking about. That you know they’ve watched the same episode six times. That you know what makes them passionate about television.
Collisions was built around those people. The people who cry during episode finales. The people who have strong opinions about cinematography and will tell you about it whether you want to hear or not. The people that will legitimately mourn when one of their favourite shows gets cancelled. We know these people pretty well: most of us are that person and many of us have spent enough time scouring the internet for gifts for other members of this group to recognize what works and what doesn’t. Here’s the thing about what works: it almost never comes in the form of what you’d expect.
tv clubs, the official merchandise, stuff labeled for “TV addicts” annoys when it arrives. It also undermines the passion of the viewer. We’ve had much more success with gifts that are clearly crafted with some care. That treat the shows they reference as important cultural texts rather than opportunities to slap a logo on something cheesy. Art prints that you’d actually want to hang up, rather than tossed in a bag for recycling. Books that provide insight into the creation of a show, deep enough that wikipedia and a Google search can’t replicate. Things created by people who care about television as much as the person you’re buying for. Clothes that will fit into their wardrobe as well as your own. That standard eliminates a lot of options but sticking to it really helps narrow down things.
We haven’t tried to include gifts for every show known to humanity. That isn’t our jam. Instead we’ve curated some gifts that any tv enthusiast would appreciate while mixing in stuff that caters to more specific interests we think are awesome. Everything here has been run through the same filter. Would a person who loves tv really want this? Would they be happy to hang it up, read it, wear it? Would they view this as more than just another gift? If the answer wasn’t yes we didn’t stock it.
