Miami Heat
Some people run hot. And when we say hot, we don’t always mean temperamentally, although yes that too occasionally. We mean that some people actually prefer their food hot. They crave the sauce that makes your eyes water. They hunt down the chilli oil that the restaurant keeps tucked away at the back of the counter. Find a perfectly mild meal somewhat lacking and would rather sweat over the dinner table than feel nothing at all. If that sounds like someone you know, we have curated a collection just for them.
We put this together because gifting something amazing for the chilli head in your life is frustratingly difficult. ‘Does heat scale?’ we hear you cry. ‘Are they attempting to achieve database pure capsaicinONE distilled pepper extract death?’ Nah. The overly-obvious stuff, the dusty bottle of Tabasco or the novelty jar of something setting itself up to disappoint with a name like Death Wish, is not the solution. Anyone who truly loves spice has already run up that flagpole and has the stomach ulcers to prove it. What hot sauce enthusiasts want is something a little more considered. Something that acknowledges their palate is refined in its own right, rather than simply say, extreme. Heat as a flavour to enhance a meal rather than as a challenge to be endured.
We scoured for things that actually deserve a place in your kitchen. Chilli condiments with layers of flavour beyond ‘are you fucking kidding me’. Hot sauces that a chef would actually reach for, as opposed to just reach to photograph. Pork scratchings you can enjoy eating without wondering if you accidentally swallowed some stove cleaner. We looked at ingredients, at provenance, at the people behind these products and why. Many bottles were disqualified solely for reaching for the easy-grab spectacle over substance route. It left us with some pieces we think only true heat seekers will appreciate. But please, if you know someone who loves spice, give them something from this collection. We guarantee they will immediately know where you’ve been spending your time.
Oh and apparently this collection also makes for an excellent gift for that person who loves food, but is otherwise really difficult to buy for. It feels thoughtful without having to Google their kitchen staples. Specific enough that they will know you put effort in, but not so niche that you need to include a guide. Trawling those lines with any degree of credibility is tough, and we honestly think this little collection nails it.
If there is someone in your life that turns every meal into a mild adventure. Who cherishes the bits everyone else leaves on their plate, and lights up when you mention a hot sauce they haven’t tried yet. Start here.
