There’s a type of sports fan who doesn’t want just any shirt with a logo on it. Cavaliers fans have earned that luxury more than most. This fanbase suffered through the lean years, watched their best player get traded away and returned, and then rejoiced as that same player did the impossible in 2016, something that no Cleveland athlete had done in 50-plus years. You don’t bleed for a team like that and cop a random mug from the motorway services Shop’n’Save.
So we thought about that fan when we compiled this list. The one who replays the games. The one who rewatches the block, the chase down, Game 7 gut punch moment like it was yesterday. The fan who wants a gift that actually has significance rather than was arbitrarily coloured wine.
These were selected with a few different occasions in mind. There’s the obvious one; birthday or Christmas when you know the Cavaliers mean something to your loved one and you want to get them something that shows it. But we also kept in mind the self buyer. The fan buying for themselves. It’s a completely valid occurrence and we’re not here to pretend it doesn’t exist. Good Cavs merchandise isn’t an impulse buy. It’s investing in the things that matter to you.
What we looked for was quality and care. Products that look as good IRL as they do on the product page. Clothes that fit correctly instead of hanging off some dude like it was tailor-made for the Hulk. Merchandise with some nods to the history of this franchise because this franchise has history to lean on. We didn’t want to showcase the lowest common denominator versions of fan gear. It already exists and does nobody any justice.
Wine and gold runs deep in this city. The Cavs have provided their fans with memories that teams in cities with longer celebrated sports legacies will never experience. We tried to find gifts that are worthy of those moments. Nothing flashy. Nothing cheap. Nothing filling your stocking that just happened to be plastered with a logo. Things we think the true wine and gold bleed for.
