2nd Anniversary
Two years in is a strange and specific place to buy a gift for. Your first anniversary feels like it has some ceremony to it. And then as you get further down the road the milestone numbers sort of do the heavy lifting for you. But two years sort of sits quietly in the middle. It’s significant, but in a way that doesn’t announce itself. And finding something that speaks to that feels important, but also requires more thought than most folks will give it.
The traditional material for a second anniversary is cotton. Ugh, we know. Cotton. It’s that Patented™ kind of fact that people Google and then mostly ignore because you don’t really know what you’re supposed to do with that information. But bear with us, because we actually think there is something to it. Cotton is the thread-count of everyday life. Bed sheets that you’ve slept on together. Soft, worn fabric that doesn’t exactly look new but also doesn’t look like anyone ever washes your stuff. There’s a case to be made that it’s the perfect material to symbolize two years together.
So we started with cotton, and worked outwards from there. Some of our picks follow the cotton tradition in the right way. Others don’t care about the tradition at all and focus more on what spending two years with someone actually feels like. Settled. Warm. Comfortable; as in cozies, not as in crappy. Two people who aren’t putting on a show for each other like they maybe did early on. Who have met each other somewhere sincere.
We weren’t going for sentimental. Two years isn’t about grand gestures. It’s about showing you were paying attention. It’s personal, but not so personal that it tries too hard. Everything on this list are gifts we’d hit if we found ourselves staring down this anniversary, trying to get it right.
We looked at some things that were lovely but kind of cold. The objects that you Instagram and then immediately forget about. Those got cut. We looked at some things that were sweet, but just a little baby-handed for what we think of as a second anniversary, but would work for other occasions.
