Jaws
There are films you enjoy and then there are films that get into you. Jaws is the second kind. It came out in 1975 and it has never really left. Not just because it frightened an entire generation out of the water, though it did, but because it is a genuinely brilliant piece of filmmaking with three perfect central performances, a John Williams score that does things to your nervous system, and a shark that barely appears and somehow still manages to be the most terrifying thing you have ever seen on a screen. If you know someone who loves this film, they love it properly. Not as nostalgia, not as kitsch. As a serious piece of cinema that happens to also be enormously fun.
Buying for that person is both easy and dangerous. Easy because the affection runs deep and anything well chosen lands hard. Dangerous because there is a lot of Jaws merchandise out there that completely misses the point, the jokey novelty stuff, the mass produced prints, the things that treat it like a theme park attraction rather than a masterwork of suspense. We have no interest in that version of the film.
What we went looking for were things that understood why people actually love Jaws. The craft of it. The atmosphere. The specific pleasure of a film that trusts its audience and builds dread with patience and then pays it off spectacularly. We wanted pieces that would work in a real home, not just a den covered in posters. Things that a thoughtful film lover would be proud to own rather than mildly embarrassed to display.
We also kept thinking about occasion. The Jaws fan who has a birthday coming up, the person whose whole summer ritual involves a rewatch, the film student who can explain exactly why the Indianapolis speech is one of the greatest scenes ever written. We had all of those people in mind while we picked this collection.
Nothing here got in because it was easy to find. It got in because we would give it ourselves.
