Uncles are an odd little bunch. Weirdly wonderful, collecting people that don’t fall into the normal corners of a family tree. They’re not parents, so there’s none of that pressure. They aren’t strangers, so there’s none of that oddness. The best of them slip you twenty bucks when they come around at Christmas, take your side during arguments they really shouldn’t be taking sides in, and they actually have opinions on things nobody else in your family cares about. They are specific people though. Truly, deeply specific people and that’s what makes buying for them wonderful, and really, truly difficult.
Of course it’s difficult because uncles don’t ask for things. If they want something, chances are they already have it. If they don’t, they’ve probably passed the age where they’ve started wanting stupid shit again. Novelty socks, random bottles of who-knows-what, every “for him” gift box fits into a category of “someone forgot to think about the person it was meant for.” Nobody wants to buy their Uncle anything anonymous and we’ve never felt good giving gift cards from the forecourt to someone you actually care about.
So instead we hunted down gifts that actually suit them. Some things that don’t need to shout from the shelves, but have some thought behind them. Things that your uncle will open and immediately have an opinion on because it wasn’t just gifted to them…it landed somewhere.
We thought about our uncle that can recite song lyrics to albums he bought before you were born. The uncle that has a hobby he takes way too seriously for anyone else to care about. We thought about our uncles that cook like it’s a competition, drink like they’re growing barrels instead of bellies, and read books so that they have something to talk about besides the relative they spend it with. Books that lets those uncles know you were actually listening when they talked about war stories, or old music, or fishing trips.
Also, every product in this guide went through the same questioning. Would we buy this for our own uncle? A good uncle. Someone we actually know and care about? Would we drop it in the Amazon basket on their birthday or at Christmas or whenever we felt like saying cheers? If the answer was no, we ditched it. We didn’t want a “gift guide” filled with things we could easily find ourselves or that photographed well. There’s a lot of lazy gift ideas out there masquerading as “being thoughtful.” We didn’t want any of that shit.
So it’s small. We mean that as a compliment. You won’t find the right gift for your uncle by looking at hundreds of things you should get them. Presents are about paying attention to the ones you care about and that’s what we tried to do here.
