Whisky gifts have a tendency to fall into two categories. Either you know the person really well and have bought something fantastic. Or you’re standing in a shop pondering your options and know the gift recipient will be able to tell you didn’t care all that much. We compiled this list because we wanted to do right by the latter.
From the well-stocked shelf of a whisky shop there are plenty of bottles that will suffice. But they’re kind of boring. If you know someone who loves whisky then chances are they know it pretty well too and can tell the difference between something chosen and something tossed into a basket. We’ve only included bottles, sets and paraphernalia that we’ve chosen ourselves for someone very particular. Not someone we’re trying to convert to drinking whisky. Someone who knows what they like and who will be delighted to try something they haven’t got to yet.
We could have filled this list with Scotch because it’s awesome and there are a ton of great bottles out there. But we didn’t want this to be limiting. Outstanding whisky is being produced all over the world these days. Geography was the only criterion we didn’t concern ourselves with. Quality was our focus. If a whisky or whisky accessory didn’t make the cut on taste or style or had a backstory that was legitimately interesting, it didn’t make the list. We also didn’t want anything where the packaging is more expensive than the whisky inside.
You’ll find single malts here from small distilleries that are making world class whisky you’ve never heard of. Japanese whisky that will impress even people who think they’ve spent too much time exploring the category. Blends that should be talked about more and aren’t. And a few accessories and experiences for folks who already have plenty of bottles but want to take things to the next level.
A lot of whisky gifts are for the same occasions. Big or small birthdays, retirements, Fathers Day, Christmas, or just thanking somebody that you want to really mean it. We’ve selected gifts for all those occasions. But we’ve also included stuff for when you just know somebody that likes whisky and want to get it right.
A well chosen whisky gift is one of the best gifts you can give. Not because we’ve made it expensive (some of these are. Some of these are definitely expensive.) but because it lets the person know you actually care enough to have paid attention.
