Vodka
Most vodka purchasing decisions are made like fuel purchases. See brand on shelf you recognise, pay for it, leave the store. It should therefore come as no surprise that a well selected vodka can make for a great gift. It immediately lets the person into whose hands you've entrusted it know that you actually gave some thought to the purchase, that you know something they didn't, that you did better than what stock policy dictates comes atop the shelf at eye level at your local supermarket.
When we started putting this collection together we did so because vodka has a reputation it doesn't fully deserve. Most folks believe it's all identical, all flavourless, and all entirely interchangeable. They'd be wrong on all counts. The differences between an English countryside grain vodka, a potato vodka from Poland distilled the same way for decades (if not centuries) and a small batch French vodka made from wheat are as real as they are noteworthy. Mouthfeel is important. Chillability is important. How a great one fills your martini glass vs how a poor one does is nothing short of significant.
So we looked for character, and we avoided anything that felt like it was playing to a crowd looking for the flashiest bottle across the room. There are a lot of vodkas out there encased in frosty glass cubes with wildly sculptural bottles and we've stayed away from most of those. Fancy packaging isn't flavor. Instead we focused on distilleries with a clear vision of what they were doing and why, brands who knew their audience, and vodka that tastes like it.
Some of our picks will speak to the martinormentality crowd. Some are geared towards the person who loves a good Bloody Mary and wants a vodka robust enough to stand up to the tomato juice and hot sauce. Some are just for the person who enjoys knowing there's a craft version of something they already enjoy, much in the same way a great cook enjoys a proper chef's knife.
We'd drink all of them ourselves. That's our bar for entry. Would we bring this to a dinner party? Would I feel good wrapping this for someone's birthday? If the answer's no we didn't include it. Everything we did includes here is earning its spot.
