Tea
We’re all friends with the person who is serious about tea. If you’re reading this and you aren’t, you’ll know who we mean when we publish this. The ones we mean aren’t the “serious about loose leaf instead of bags” types. Although we’re not knocking that if that’s you. We mean the types that have strong opinions on water temperature, that can tell you the difference between a first flush and a second flush Darjeeling, and will politely admonish you if you pour the milk in first. Figuring out what to get that kind of person can be nerve wracking, but it helps if you’ve done your research. We did ours.
After steeping around, what we discovered is that tea gifts have a tendency to fall into one of two categories. Generic and thoughtless or really rather wonderful. A tin of assorted bags from the supermarket isn’t a gift. It’s a-free items-left-in-packaging-center-behind-and-somehow-it’s-seasonally-decorated-now-basket. Thing. But take the time to get something well considered, from people who obviously actually know their tea, and you’re on to something completely different. It lets them know you pay attention. It lets them know you know them.
So we poured over every option we could find and picked it all in the same way we choose everything for this site. Would we give this to ourselves? To someone we loved. Would we give it wondering if we missed something better? A lot of tea related gadgets were eliminated from the pool because they looked great but didn’t actually taste of anything, or were just cool objects with no real reason to exist. We kept the stuff that we actually loved.
Some of that stuff is about the tea itself. Rare, single estate offerings that you will never find tucked away next to the Typhoo at your local corner shop. Some of it is about the entire experience. The pot. The strainer. The cup. Tea is special for a lot of people because of the actual act of making it. For these people, you can’t have one without the other.
So whether you’re buying for yourself or a tea aficionado in your life, these are the gifts we reach for first. Because tea shouldn’t be about the pretty package or the most practical item. It’s about the people you’re drinking it with.
