Rum
Rum is overlooked. If you want to gift someone whisky because it’s serious, you grab a rum and dump it in cola at the party. You don’t drink it neat; you buy it duty free in a plastic bag. It’s unfortunate because nothing in this collection is anything like that rum. These bottles are aged, interesting and come with histories that reach back through decades across oceans and island chains. Good rum has history and complexity in abundance.
That’s why it makes such a great gift for someone who enjoys drinking. We’ve curated this list because whenever we went looking for rum to buy ourselves we kept finding amazing bottles that were being totally ignored by drinkers who would have loved them if they’d only had been shown them. So here we are: showing you. Every rum we’ve selected has been chosen for doing something interesting and exciting, not because it came from a hip location or has a cute label.
Speaking of awesome locations. One of the best things about rum is that there’s something for everybody within the category. From aged bottles with complexity to rival the best Scotch on your shelf, to funky little agricoles that taste like absolutely nothing else in your cupboard. There are small producers doing things their own way, batch after batch. We’ve tried to cover everything without including anything we don’t actually think is very good.
