Gin
People who love gin are a discerning bunch. They have preferences, strong opinions on tonic, and will instinctively know if you’ve bought a bottle from the bottom shelf and slapped a bow on it. Cheers for telling us, is what I’d say if we were friends. It’s not judgement, it’s helpful intel. It means when you pick the right gift, you really hit the mark.
When we started compiling bottles for this list we realised gin has become one of those categories where there’s a huge gap between an incredible gift, and something utterly forgettable. Gift lists seem disinterested in the murky mid-ground, so we went off and hunted down the stuff that would actually hit home. The bottle a serious gin aficionado won’t already own. The glass that elevates the whole experience. The tonic that changes everything.
We tried to cover a variety of occasions here without watering anything down. Birthday. Thank you. Hostess gift. Christmas. Congratulations. You know that scenario where someone does you a huge favour and you can’t just give them a card? Gin is great for all of it. It doesn’t need a reason to celebrate but somehow feels special compared to other spirits.
The small details. We’ve paid attention to things other gift lists don’t mention. Provenance is key. We dug around to find small distilleries making interesting things happen with botanicals. Meaningful brands with stories to tell, not ads written by marketing teams. Gifts that will arrive with conversation attached. Packaging is worth considering too. With gin especially the unwrapping is part of the fun.
There’s nothing in this list because we needed to fill space. Nowhere near. If we don’t say YES, THAT’S THE ONE! when we pick it up, then it’s not in. That rules out some big names that we feel lean a little too heavily on reputation, and includes things that might not look like much but absolutely smash expectations.
We hope you find something wonderful here. A gift for the gin lover who has everything, the person just discovering that G and T’s can be something special, and for everyone in between who deserves better than an off the shelf multipack with a ribbon stuck on it.
