For most people cider = what's served over ice in the corner of the pub garden. Sweet. Cold. Forgettable. We don’t. Drink a single variety cider made with bittersweet apples from Herefordshire or a bottle of wild fermented pear from a Somerset producer making only 300 cases per year and you’ll realise cider has been very seriously undersold for a long time.
That’s exactly why we’ve put together this collection. It’s one of our favourite gift categories, because the reaction of the person on the receiving end is always one of pleasant surprise. You offer someone a bottle of real cider packaged beautifully and watch them having their flavour perception re-calibrated.
Mind you, we’ve been picky about what to include here. If it’s mass produced we don’t want it. If it could be sold from a supermarket shelf it’s not in here. We wanted producers who care about apples and pears in the same way a good winemaker cares about grapes. No shortcuts. Plenty of patience. Orchards are important. Varieties are important. Production matters. When that matters to someone, you can taste it.
There’s another practical reason this collection is useful. For people who don’t want to buy wine (when in doubt, buy wine) cider is a great alternative gift. Everyone drinks cider. Even people who don’t drink wine. People into natural fermentation and production processes will find a lot to get excited about here too. Cider works as a birthday gift. It’s great as a thank you. Send it to someone who’s just moved into a house with a garden they’ll actually enjoy tending. Everyone loves cider but the opportunities to spring it on someone are surprisingly specific.
