Meet the person who’ll see a tribute to Space Invaders from twenty yards away and feel an instant and entirely irrational connection to the person who made it. Maybe they lived their childhood by dropping coins into slots. Maybe they stumbled into it years later and got just as obsessed. Or maybe they just recognise those eight oncoming rows of pixilated aliens as something more than a coin-ops game from 1978. They know it symbolises the instant where pop culture and tech blended together and created something that hasn’t really gone away since.
That’s who we built this collection for. The person who’s already got the t-shirt and has formed staunch preferences about which decade of arcade playing mattered most. We didn’t want worthless knick-knacks playing off nostalgia you have to earn. We want you to be able to keep this stuff. Display it. Use it without that slight sense of embarrassment you get when you realise someone else has given you a gift you won’t really use.
This doesn’t just mean posters and T-shirts, though we did plenty of digging to find the tasteful options rather than the basic wears that pill after three washes and can see just how cheap they really are. Some of what you’re buying here actually feels weighty. Items you can put on desks and shelves and walls that pay off when you look closer. Objects that earn that second look from a knowledgeable person, by the way. That’s most of this stuff’s purpose.
Pixels allowed, a lot of what came into consideration hovered around whether it knew what it was talking about or if it was just using Space Invaders as a hall-pass to make a quick dollar. There’s a difference between merchandise made with passion and merchandise made by people who realised they could slap a logo on something and sell it. We did our best to make sure you’re only getting the former.
