Game Boy
We're not talking about the kind of nostalgia that affects most people. We're talking about the deep-rooted kind. Not the fuzzy feelings you get from looking at old pictures. The kind of nostalgia that you can feel in your hands; the memory of a button press and a sound alike. The unmistakable weight of something you used to carry around everywhere as a child and then forgot about.
The Game Boy can invoke these feelings in people. See an adult in their 30s or 40s pick one up and it's like watching somebody listening to music on a Walkman describe happiness. When they put it down something has shifted. That’s not the nostalgia we’re capitalising on. That’s what we’re celebrating.
We curated this collection because the gifts inside mean something. They aren't capitalising on a logo or a colour scheme because it is trending at the moment. They're for everybody whose answer to 'what was your first game console?' genuinely was Game Boy. They'll play Tetris or Pokémon until their eyes fell square. They can recall the specific shade of grey the first one was and how the screen looked in the dark.
You know the one. They exist in every family and at the centre of almost every friendship group. They're also the person you have the most difficulty buying gifts for. Because the second they need something, they already own it.
What mattered most to us was quality. We only wanted things that we knew would last. Things that were created with care. That someone would actually use or display instead of smiling politely and sticking it on a shelf. Novelties were out. We could see plenty of those anywhere.
We wanted to find gifts that would make someone pause and look twice. Pick it up, hold it and feel something real about it.
Some things in this collection are perfect for parents who now want to share that feeling with their own kids. Others are unabashed celebrations of Game Boys for the people who owned them. And truth be told, we've included a couple of items that will speak to people who didn't own one but grew up with them sitting next to their plates at the dinner table; forgotten by brothers, sisters, partners and friends who left theirs anywhere and everywhere.
The Game Boy may have slowly faded into the background. But it never went away. Not truly. Today it's become the kind of thing you want to celebrate properly and these gifts do just that.
