It’s probably safe to say that there is a person in your life that when they hear that opening melody they instantly freeze whatever they’re doing. Doesn’t matter their age or how dull they’ve allowed their existence to become. Thunder. Thunder. Thundercats and something just clicks over. We know this person. Because most of us are this person. And if you know us, you know how difficult or simple it can be to buy something for this person. There’s very little middle ground. It’s either going to be spot on or hilariously wrong. The hilariously wrong boxes are already full at your local charity store. Generic crap that probably didn’t even have Thundercats printed on it until someone slapped a logo on at the eleventh hour. We don’t care about that stuff. What we’ve been hunting down instead are pieces that treat Lion O, Snarf and Mumm Ra like the big bad adults that watched them patiently waiting at the dinner table cared about them. Things clearly made by people who cared. Picking gifts for Thundercat lovers is difficult because said lovers are not kids. They’re adults with standards and opinions and nowhere near as easily pleased as you might remember being. They remember what fucking colour the Sword of Omens was painted. They know Third Earth. They’ll let you know how they feel about the 2011 series reboot. So the threshold for what is and isn’t good enough to own or display is higher than most people shopping will understand and that’s where the worst stuff comes into play. Everything we’re recommending here is above that threshold. We considered craftsmanship, if it honoured the source material and if a die hard would be truly excited or just be thankful. Being thankful was never good enough. We wanted the look you get when someone opens a gift and knows without you having to say it that the person buying it understands why it matters to them, not what it is. Thundercats was on the air for two seasons in the mid-eighties and yet burrowed its way into our collective souls that we’ve carried it with us ever since. These gifts are for those that didn’t want it to leave.
