There’s a person in your life that is going to lose their collective mind over Leonardo or Raphael done right on something they can actually use. We know who this person is. Some of us are that person. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are old enough at this point that fandom for them cuts across generational lines in a way that very few things do these days. Adults in their forties who watched the original cartoon religiously on Saturday mornings and still feel a flicker of something when they see that stupid logo. Kids being born right now who are just discovering these characters and have extremely strong opinions about who their favourite Turtle is.
Michelangelo. Of course he’s your favourite. We won’t debate that here.
What we wanted to do with this collection was sift past stuff that was simply worth buying and find things that are truly worth owning. There is a lot of TMNT merchandise in the world. Most of it makes very little effort to actually be good. They slap the licence on a piece of junk and call it a day. We’re not interested in any of it. What we want are pieces that respect the source material, that a fan can look at and know that somebody actually cared about what they were making.
That’s important because the sorts of people you buy something like this for can spot that from miles away. Someone who grew up on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles knows cowabunga isn’t supposed to feel like that. They can spot instantly whether a product was made with love or just made because licencing made it possible. We did our best to keep ours on the right side of that line.
This collection is perfect for whether you’re buying for that kid who has just discovered the wonderful world of cartoons or that person in their thirties who had the action figures as a kid and still loves them to this day. Kids, we promise you that they still love them. Gift giving based on nostalgia is only good because of the object you’re receiving. A thing that is well made and something you loved as a kid is a wonderful feeling. A cheap shitty version is just going to make you feel like somebody didn’t try. We tried really hard.
