It’s the Stormtrooper. There’s something about him that has refused to go away. 50 years on from the first time that white armour hit the cinema screen it remains the first image people reach for when they want to reference Star Wars without referencing everything about Star Wars. It’s not Luke. It’s not Vader. It’s not even the Millennium Falcon. It’s the Stormtrooper. And there’s a reason for that. We think about it more than is probably healthy for us.
The problem is that when you go to buy gifts like this most of what you’ll find is either colossal or embarrassing. Colossal in the sense of ‘those giant statues no one has space for’ and embarrassing as in ‘cheap plastic crap that looks nothing like the pictures.’ We have zero interest in either. Instead we wanted to dig around for the stuff that lasts. Objects and pieces that respect the source material and exist in somebody’s home or life without looking like a shrine or a clearance bin.
More than anything else we’re drawn to Stormtroopers because of the design. Minimal. Clean. Almost architectural. It’s a silhouette that works. Print designs that work. Works rendered in ceramic or cast in resin. Works pressed into the face of a watch. Fictional creations very rarely have that kind of cross-pollination potential which means the merch that leans into that aesthetic – as opposed to simply slapping a logo on a calculator – actually lands.
Speaking of landing, the people we’re buying for here range further than you might expect. Sure there’s the lifelong-obsessed who saw the original trilogy at the cinema and have never recovered. There’s the ‘they took me to see it when I was young and now I own every bake-to-look-like-metal cookie mould exists’ folks. But there’s also people who love a good piece of design who just happen to know where this particular one came from. They all deserve better than a crappy mug from a service station.
We kept this pretty tight. Because that’s always the point isnt it? Curate a small collection of stuff we’d actually buy ourselves. If you have to attach a ‘this is pretty cruddy but it was cheap’ disclaimer then what’s the point? We’re not here for that.
