Movies can be cherished. Shrek is something else entirely. For over twenty years now it has inhabited cultural memory rent free, creating a whole language of memes in its wake; it’s gained a weird sort of cultural reverence and developed a fanbase unwilling to let it quietly shelf out where—strictly speaking—it belongs: in the children’s corner. Strictly speaking; as anyone who believes Shrek is for children has never sat in the company of adults uproariously guffawing at Donkey or softly crying at a scene from the second movie we’re not at liberty to name. It isn’t rose tinted nostalgia. It’s specific. It’s dear to us.
Therefore picking the right gift celebrating that affection is important.
