Game of Thrones
Some fandoms are casual. Game of Thrones is not one of them. The people who love this show really love it, in the way that involves rewatching specific episodes, having strong opinions about which house they belong to, and being able to hold an actual conversation about whether the final season was a betrayal or just a disappointment. Buying for someone like that is either very easy or very hard depending on whether you know what you are doing.
We went looking for gifts that respect the obsession rather than patronise it. That meant ruling out a lot. The generic stuff, the mass produced tat with a dragon on it and nothing else to recommend it, the kind of thing you find at the checkout in a gift shop and feel vaguely sad about. None of that made it through. What we were after was the gift that makes a real fan stop and properly look at it, the kind of thing they would have bought themselves if they had found it first.
There is a version of this that works for someone who watched it once and enjoyed it. But mostly we had the proper fans in mind. The ones with a favourite episode, a house loyalty they will defend, a strong feeling about Ned Stark that they have never quite recovered from. Those are the people we were shopping for and that is the standard we held every single pick to.
We also thought about the range of occasions, because this collection does a lot of lifting. It works for birthdays, for Christmas, for the friend who is doing a full rewatch and needs something to mark the occasion properly. Some of these are things to display. Some are things to use. Some are things to wear without it feeling like a costume. All of them say something more considered than a last minute scroll through a marketplace at midnight.
Westeros is a brutal, gorgeous, complicated world and the people who fell in love with it deserve gifts that reflect that. We think these do.
