Selecting a wedding gift shouldn’t be this difficult. You know the couple, you care about them, you want whatever you pick to be meaningful, but instead you find yourself faced with a gift list full of monogrammed towels and single-use gadgets they’ll neither need nor want. Whilst it’s intended to help, gift lists rarely do. They reduce the entire thing to one endless shopping transaction. And anyone religiously sticking to said list tends to purchase something meaningful rather than giftable.
We curated this collection with entirely different philosophy in mind. We picked everything ourselves, only choosing items that we would want gifted to us; stuff that feels useful and comforting rather than something you pretend to love but secretly hide in the back of a cupboard until you can donate it eighteen months down the line. We were also searching for gifts that feel thoughful without being sentimental, gifts with gravitas if that makes sense.
Your political views.
To ensure everything in this collection met our standards we did, however, rule out a lot of stuff. Gadgets and appliances that just did the job but weren’t exciting enough were quickly dismissed, as was anything that we felt was trying too hard to capitalise on tradition or sentimentality. We’re after things that will arrive on a kitchen countertop or shelf or coffee table and be used, or looked at, or talked about for years to come, not weeks.
We also considered that when you’re buying a wedding gift you’re sometimes closer to one half of the couple than the other. And while you want that reflected in whatever you buy you also have to tread carefully if they’ve only given you as a colleague or friend. Then there’s the opposite problem. You know the situation; you left it too late and there’s nothing they need. A good gift collection works for all of these situations; our favourite gifts are ones that are good for any occasion, not just weddings.
Keeping the collection this small was very intentional too. A huge list of mediocre gift ideas isn’t going to help anyone who’s already stressing about table plans, travel logistics and whether the event is even dress pants appropriate. That’s the easy part. Our job was to do the hard yards and pick out actually wonderful gifts. Send these folksters a gift and well hopefully you have.
