New Year
January is an odd feeling month. The festivities have ended, the tree is packed away and suddenly there is a lot more empty space where noise used to live. For some that is welcomed silence. For others it’s an empty space that needs something true filling it up, something with some momentum behind it. Something to look forward to.
These are new year gifts. They aren’t talked about much, which is why we think they are important. December becomes Christmas’s Birthday Party and suddenly January 1st feels abandoned and irrelevant. But taking the time to acknowledge the new year for someone else, not because the date made you but because you want to give them a solid start to it; that’s kind.
So we’ve given this some thought. What actually works for this moment? Not the obvious things that everyone will tell you about when December rolls round and Christmas Gifts have moved from ‘ideas’ into ‘must dos’. No bulletproof mattresses or refrigerators that can make cocktails. We wanted things with a bit more gravitas; gifts that speak to the year ahead without being Heavy with it. Here are some things that feel like beginnings.
Some of our picks are generous because January is a miserly month. Pleasures over urges. So some of this picks embrace that because January is (almost) all smoke bullets and nobody needs that. Some of it is about setting intentions. Small ones. The ones you whisper to yourself not the ones shouted from rooftops. You’d buy a few of these for yourself and not blink.
And who are you buying for? The friend who felt like they were putting on a Christmas show for everyone else in December and could do with something for just themselves. The colleague who has a big year coming up and deserves a gift that acknowledges that, without banging on about it. The friend trying to create something new who would welcome a gentle but well aimed push.
Keep these gifts were intentional. A short list of things we really liked, picked because they felt right for this moment (and this moment alone).
