Christening
Choosing a christening gift can be tricky. It’s one of those events where you know the present really does matter. Far from just needing something fun, there’s actually pressure to get it right. This won’t be something you chuck in a cupboard and forget about. This is, in many cases, the first gift. Something that might sit on a shelf for years, or get kept in a box and rediscovered decades later when the child knows who you are and what you tried to say with it. We get that pressure. We understand.
The trouble is that a lot of the most obvious gifts wear their welcome fairly quickly. Sets of silver spoons that nobody will know what to do with. Photo frames that will never quite hold a big enough picture. Keepsakes that look charming in the shop window until they spend all of their time stuck in a drawer. We have put serious thought into selecting items that actually stand the test of time, that will get used and loved rather than donated when nobody visits your house any more. Items that a parent can appreciate on behalf of a child that won’t have an opinion for a few years.
Fairly much everything featured here falls into the category of ‘lasts and means something’. Some is beautiful, special items that you know will be on display for years. Some is wonderfully practical and the parents will quietly thank you for years to come. You’ll also find a bunch that’s both. We had difficulty narrowing down those picks, they’re just that good.
We’ve also put thought into personalized gifts. A christening gift engraved with a name and date takes on an importance that others can’t touch. Each one is no longer an object, they’re a record of the day itself. That doesn’t work for everything. But when it works, it really works, and we’ve included several options here that we feel are worth that extra step.
There was one type of gift we didn’t want to include though.token gestures that will be forgotten about as soon as you turn the knob on the church door. Christening gifts have garnered themselves quite a forgettable reputation over the years and whilst researching for this article we have come to the opinion that that reputation is because people just aren’t trying hard enough. These are the gifts we would buy if it was our own child’s christening. We would happily arrive at a font on a freezing cold Saturday morning clutching our favourites wearing something stupidly smart and feeling like the occasion should be felt. If we wouldn’t bring it, it doesn’t get included.
