Tequila
When people think of tequila, they think of the stuff that tastes like a regrettable decision at a student house party. Most people never move past that stage. That’s the tequila that turns people away for decades. With this collection, we wanted to show off the complete opposite. The aged añejos that have far more in common with a fine whisky than a shot at midnight. The small batch blancos that have a crisp minerality that dedicated drinkers hunt down. The reposados that make you thankful you slowed down enough to pay attention.
Giving someone booze as a gift is always underrated. People stick to whisky or wine because it’s easy; there’s a lot more littered knowledge about those classics. Give someone a good bottle of tequila and you land differently. It feels more considered because people don’t usually go there. Whoever you’re gifting will know you took the time to think about it.
Like many of our drinks adventures, we’ve been enjoying agave spirits for years. You’ll notice that in the selections we’ve made. There’s nothing in here that’s made the cut simply because of a pretty bottle or a celebrity on the label. We selected based on quality, provenance and whether a distillery is actually doing something worth bothering about. Brands we loved didn’t make the cut. Only ones we would buy for ourselves (or grab someone else’s hand and thrust a bottle into) are included.
We’ve also considered who these would be for. Some are for people who know their tequila already and would be excited to find something they haven’t tried. Some are for people who think tequila can only be the cheap stuff they had once. Either person is a good gift opportunity. The spirit rewards exploration and a great bottle is a great way to start.
If you care more about what’s in the glass than what’s on the outside, these are the bottles we would recommend. Begin your journey here and you’ll never need to look elsewhere.
