Thirty five years in and The Simpsons still lands a joke. Right now. That isn’t an accident and it’s not just nostalgia doing all the heavy lifting. The Simpsons built a position in the culture by being smarter and funnier and weirder than pretty much all of the stuff around it and anyone who loves it properly knows the difference between the person who watched it now and again and the person who can recite the monorail episode word for word. Bonus points if they can name the call back several years later. That sort of thing matters when you are buying a present.
We put this collection together because we think most Simpsons merchandise misses that. Homer staring idiotically or some barely known catchphrase poured over whatever garment was cheapest at the time and the person on the receiving end knows straight away how little thought you put into it. We know Simpsons fans. We know a lot of Simpsons fans and the sort of people who would buy this as gifts. They want something that might have come from another fan. Something that relies on a reference but rewards you for paying attention. Something actually made well enough that the recipient will want to keep it up and not hide it away.
The stuff we picked hits a lot of these notes. Stuff for the home that belongs on a shelf and won’t be removed to some cupboard within weeks. T-shirts and posters that wear a love of the show on your chest without plunging into Dad Funny territory. Things for fans who spent their Sunday night childhood watching it and people who found it much later and blasted through thirty something seasons obsessively. Everyone is a valid Simpson’s fan. Everyone will find something they like here.
We didn’t pick anything that just felt like a company poached an artist to help them hit a licensing target and could care less what they came up with. We asked if the person who opened it would like it. Not be politely grateful for it but actually, genuinely like it. The kind of present where you immediately grab someone else in the room and show them. Asking that question stopped a lot of stuff we first considered.
The Simpsons has the unique position of being something almost everyone knows. Loves. Knows enough about to have an opinion on. That makes it a great gift area if you do it right.
