Piano
Someone who can lose an hour on a piano without noticing they’re doing it. Someone who’s grade eight, or someone who plays the same three chords they learnt at fourteen. Doesn’t matter. They have a connection with that instrument that’s specific and unique and says something true about them. Which means that if you’re paying attention it’s totally possible to buy them something great.
For this collection, we listened. We talked to piano players and piano teachers and researched far more than you’d ever want to know about how pianos work. There’s a reason piano players are not a niche. Millions of people practise in converted back bedrooms and living rooms and teaching studios around the world and yet, when it comes time to shop for them, most gift guides toss out a mug with a treble clef on it and call it a day.
We wanted everything in this collection to be something a person who plays would actually love. Not stuff that only sort-of acknowledges one of the world’s greatest hobbies. Widgets that fit smoothly into the actual life of learning a sonata, or tuning your own instrument, or living with a piano as the commanding presence in every room. We dove deep to find stuff that understands that difference, because it matters so much when you’re trying to buy something that’ll land just right.
Some of our favourites are wonderfully practical, the kind of thing you’d buy yourself if you got around to it but for one reason or another never do. Some are more emotionally impactful, that beautiful thing someone doesn’t need to but totally should get because you understand how much playing means to them. And some are just lovely objects that happen to perfect for life with a piano.
We also made sure this collection could work for every type of pianist out there. The kid learning their first scales. The adult who started playing again after years away for kicks. The serious student who will burn you if you don’t get it. Everyone who plays the piano deserves more than a novelty gift. We hope you’ll find something on this list that helps you show them that.
